Chapter 19: The New Plan
By Tuesday I could walk the clinic hall on my cane, slowly, with the wall on my left.
The shift had cost me exactly what I had budgeted, to the hour.
I did not regret a minute.
Roe sat in the chair beside mine in the doctor's office, with the yellow pad on his knee.
My mother sat on his other side.
I had invited her, and she had promised to be quiet, and she was keeping the promise with her whole face.
The doctor spread three sheets of paper across her desk.
"First," she said, "I want to be clear about what this is not."
"It is not a cure. There isn't one. I will say that every visit, so you don't need to hope behind my back."
"Nobody here was hoping for that," I said.
"Good. Then here is what it is."
She tapped the first sheet.
"The study finished in October. Patients on your drug who add a second one, a weekly injection you give yourself at home, had far fewer flares."
"About two a year instead of five or six. The muscle loss slows more. It doesn't stop."
