Chapter 2: Out of Legs
Roe takes her home to the apartment behind the bakery, she directs every touch, and when her legs give out she finishes on top; at dawn she cannot stand.
My apartment was one room and a bathroom at the back of the bakery, on the ground floor, because I could not do stairs.
The whole place smelled of yeast and cinnamon, even at midnight.
Roe stood in my doorway and had to duck his head under the frame.
He took his cap off, though he was already holding it, and he turned it over once in his hands.
He looked at the green quilt on the bed, the bookkeeping binders on the kitchen table, and the pill organizer by the kettle.
He looked at all of it as if it were information he wanted to remember.
"Sit on the bed," I said.
He sat.
He sat slowly, with his knees apart and his big hands on his thighs.
"Keep your hands there."
His blue eyes came up to mine.
"Yes, ma'am," he said.
It was the first time I had heard him say anything that sounded like a joke.
It made my stomach flip over.
I stood in front of him on my own two feet and put my cane against the dresser.
My cardigan came off first, and then the green scarf my mother had tied on me.
I unbuttoned the flannel with fingers that would not quite work, because I was nervous, not because of the disease.
I let it fall.
Under it I had on a plain gray bra that hung a little loose.
I had lost ten pounds since spring and never put them back.
My collarbones stood out.
My ribs showed when I breathed in.
I had spent six years dressing around that body.
I made myself stand there with the lamp on.
Roe did not move his hands.
His eyes went down me slowly, from my collarbones to my ribs to the dip of my stomach.
His breath came out of him in a rough sound.
"You're beautiful," he said.
"I'm thin."
"You're thin. And I want to put my mouth on every rib you've got."
Heat went through me from my scalp to my knees.
"Then do it," I said. "Stay sitting. I'll come to you."
I stepped between his knees.
He tipped his face up and pressed his mouth to the center of my chest, over the hum.
I felt it jump to meet him.
His lips moved down, one rib at a time, hot and slow, and I laced my fingers in his shaggy hair and held on.
He stopped at the waist of my jeans.
"Elke."
"Take them off me."
His big hands came up for the button.
He eased my jeans down my legs, and the underwear with them, and he looked at me again, and he did not look away.
He kissed the inside of my right thigh, where the muscle is thinnest.
"Everything you've got," he said against my skin. "I want all of it."
My knees wobbled.
"Lie down," I said. "On your back, in the middle. Take your shirt off first."
He pulled his shirt over his head.
His chest was broad and freckled across the shoulders, and his stomach was flat and hard from years of hauling feed.
He stretched out on my quilt and watched me with his hands behind his head.
I had meant to get on top of him right then.
Instead I stood there, looking, and I realized how much I wanted to be touched first.
"Put your mouth on me," I said.
His eyebrows went up.
"Here?" He touched my hip.
"No."
"Here?" His fingers slid down to my inner thigh.
"Roe."
"Tell me where."
"My clit," I said. "Use your mouth. Make me come."
He made a low sound in his chest, almost a growl.
"Come here."
I climbed onto the bed and knelt over his face with my hands braced on the headboard.
My legs would never have held me if I stood.
His hands closed around my hips and pulled me down.
His mouth was hot and wet and sure.
He licked me slowly, from my opening up to my clit, and my head fell back.
"Like that?" he said, into me.
"Slower."
He slowed.
His tongue pressed flat and moved in a lazy circle, over and over, and a whine came out of my throat.
"Don't stop," I said. "Don't change anything."
He didn't.
He held my hips steady, and each time my thighs began to shake he held me up.
The pressure climbed in my belly, tight and hot, and I rocked against his mouth without meaning to.
"Good girl," he said, in a voice I felt in my bones. "Take what you want. Take it all."
I came with a cry that I didn't try to hide.
It rolled up from my stomach and broke over me.
I gripped the headboard and rode his mouth through all of it while he groaned against me.
When it was over I slid down his chest, boneless.
His lips were shiny, and he looked more pleased than any man I had ever seen.
"Again," I said. "Later. Now you."
I reached for his belt.
His jeans came open and his cock rose thick and heavy into my hand, hot and already wet at the tip.
I wrapped my fingers around it and stroked him once, slowly, and he arched under me.
"Elke."
"You said you'd keep your hands where I put them."
"They're behind my head."
"Good." I stroked him again. "Stay."
I straddled his hips and held him upright and lowered myself onto him inch by inch.
He was big.
He filled me so slowly that I felt every ridge of him.
We both stopped, breathing hard, when I took the last of him in.
His hands came out from behind his head and landed on my hips.
"Not yet," I said.
They went back.
I grinned at him, a wicked little grin.
Then I began to move.
I rose and sank, slow and deep, and he stared up at me with his lips parted.
"Look at you," he said. "Look at you. You're so fucking good."
Heat built low in my belly again.
I moved faster, and my breasts bounced, and he swore, and his hips lifted to meet me.
Then the muscles in my thighs began to burn.
I knew the feeling.
It starts as a tremor, and then my legs simply stop answering.
I stopped moving and sat on him, shaking, with him still inside me.
"I'm out of legs," I said.
I said it flat.
His eyes did not change.
"Okay," Roe said. "Tell me what you want."
"Your hands," I said. "Now. Hold my hips. You move, I tell you how."
His hands closed on me, hot and strong.
He lifted me with no effort at all and rocked up into me, a long deep stroke that made me gasp.
"More like that?"
"Slower. Yes. Like that."
He moved under me, steady and slow, and I let my weight fall into his hands.
I put my palms on his chest and felt his heart pounding there, in time with the hum between us.
"Harder," I said.
He gave it to me, one hard thrust and then another, and I heard the wet slap of our bodies.
"Roe. Right there."
"Here?"
"There. Don't stop."
I dropped my forehead onto his shoulder and came again, clenching around him, and I felt him go rigid beneath me.
"Elke," he groaned, and his hips jerked. "Fuck. Elke."
He came hard, with his face in my neck and his arms locked around me, and for a long minute neither of us moved.
My thighs were jelly.
His heart slowed against my cheek.
Then he rolled us carefully onto our sides and pulled the quilt over us both.
I lay with my back against his chest and his arm over my ribs.
His big hand rested open on my stomach.
"Stay," I said into the dark. "Until morning."
"I wasn't going anywhere," he said.
I fell asleep with the silver crescent in my palm pressed to his.
At six the alarm went off.
I reached to turn it off, and my arm would not lift.
I tried to sit up, and my legs lay on the mattress.
The bond had lit, and I had come twice, and the disease had not moved an inch.
It was a bad morning.
I lay there staring at the ceiling, and waited for my legs to remember me.
