Chapter 8: County Road K

The overlook on County Road K is a gravel pull-off above the whole valley.

There was a half moon over the ridges and a cold wind, and the lights of Pike Hollow lay below us.

Roe stopped the truck and killed the engine, and I was out of the cab before he had his door open.

"Elke."

"Don't talk."

I slammed the door and stood in front of the grille with my fists clenched.

I was so angry that I was crying, and I hated that too.

"They looked at their plates," I said. "Did you see?"

"I saw."

"The two women from the creamery. I did their books for free for three winters."

"I'm not a charity case. I'm not a dead cow they're waiting to be sure about."

"No."

"I want to forget their faces." I wiped my eyes with the heel of my hand.

"I want to feel something that isn't pity. I want you to fuck me against this truck, Roe."

"I want it hard, and I don't want you to be careful."

He stood very still in the dark.

Then he took his cap off and tossed it through the open window.

"Yes," he said.

I grabbed the front of his barn coat and dragged him to me.

Our mouths crashed together.

It wasn't a kiss, it was a fight, all teeth and tongues and breath.

He caught my face in both hands and kissed me back just as hard.

He spun me around and put me against the hood.

The metal was still warm from the engine, and the heat came through my skirt.

I had worn a skirt for the supper, with tights, because I'd wanted to look like someone who could walk.

His hand slid up under it, and he found the tights and tore a hole in them with one rip.

"Hey," I said.

Then I stopped, because he had pulled my underwear aside, and two of his fingers slid into me, deep and wet.

I cried out at the cold sky.

"You're soaked," he said, in a rough, wrecked voice. "You were like this at the table."

"I was like this when you stood up."

"Say what you want."
