We went up to the north shore after dark, and the whole pack walked it behind me.
Nobody carried a torch.
The moon stood clear of the trees, round and white and bright enough to read by.
It had taken the lake apart.
Where the ice had been, there was a long lead of black water, forty yards across, steaming in the cold.
The edges were rotten lace.
Floes the size of tables turned slowly in the current and knocked together with a sound.
I stopped at the rim.
Behind me, sixty people stood on the stones and made no noise at all.
Bess sat in her wheelchair at the front with her hands folded on her belly.
The Beta stood beside her, and he was holding her hand.
"Caller," said the old woman.
She had come up beside me, leaning on her stick and the arm of a hunter.
