Chapter 13: Filing Fee

Nobody laughed in the kitchen.

Tova moved first.

She flipped to a clean page on her clipboard and wrote MAYOR across the top in capital letters.

"How do you spell Sandvik?" she asked.

"You can't run for mayor from a recliner," said the driver from Route 6.

"Watch me."

Jens hadn't said a word.

He was still sitting on the arm of the recliner, looking at me.

"You're serious," he said.

"She has four more years of billing. The state won't look. The council went five to four." I ticked them off on my fingers. "The ballot is the one paper in this city she can't sign for me."

"Say that on TV," said the woman with the frost-burned cheeks.

"She can't go on TV," Jens said. "She's lying down."

"Then I'll say it lying down."

He rubbed his beard with his whole hand.

"Filing's at the clerk's counter," he said. "In person. Standing up."

"Then I'll sit at a counter."

At the Thursday scan, C had gained four ounces.

"Better," she said. "Still not good. But better."

"I need to go to city hall for twenty minutes."

"You need to lie on your left side for the next five months."

"Twenty minutes. Sitting."

"Sitting," she said. "In a wheelchair. Somebody pushes. You don't stand, you don't climb, and you don't yell at anybody."

"I never yell."

"I watched the press conference, Signe."

On Friday at two, six drivers in orange jackets pushed me into the city hall rotunda in a wheelchair borrowed from St. Mary's.

Tova walked in front with her clipboard.

Jens walked behind with his hands on the grips.

The wheels squeaked across the brass seal.

A man waiting with a dog license laughed out loud.

Up on the balcony, three of the mayor's staffers leaned on the rail with their coffee.
