Chapter 14: The Ad
Three hundred people waited for me to answer.
Anders stood below me with the check held up.
"Until they're born," he said again, softer, for me. "That's all. Then you're free, and they're legitimate, and the trust pays out to them. You win either way."
"Either way," I said.
"Signe. You can't win an election on hotdish."
Somebody in the crowd said, "Hey," like he'd insulted their mother's cooking.
I held out my hand.
Anders looked relieved.
He put the check in it.
Two hundred thousand dollars, in his neat banker's writing, made out to Signe Thorsby.
Not Sandvik.
Thorsby.
I tore it in half.
Then in half again, and again, until it was confetti, and I held it out to Tova.
She took it with both hands, very seriously, and put it in her sandwich bag with her last two quarters.
"Recycling," she said.
The garage came apart.
Drivers cheered. Somebody hit the air horn on a plow, and then everybody did.
Anders stood in the noise with his empty hand still up.
"You can't afford to do that," he said, when it got quiet enough.
"I can't afford you," I said. "I found that out in a ditch."
The reporter from the paper had pushed to the front.
"Mr. Thorsby. Is your mother's company billing the city for streets it doesn't plow?"
Anders looked at the map on the bedsheet.
He looked at it for a long time.
"I don't know," he said.
It was the first true thing I'd heard him say since January.
He walked out between the plows without looking back.
On Sunday afternoon, somebody knocked on the duplex door.
I heard him say, "No," and then, "Wait here."
He came back to the recliner.
"It's him," he said. "He walked."
"He what?"
"There's no car. He walked here. From somewhere."
