Chapter 20: Her Son

"Lock the bathroom door," I said. "Sit on the floor. I'm coming."

"You can't drive."

"Watch me."

I hadn't driven since January.

The green Subaru sat in Jens's driveway, where he'd parked it after he got it out of the tow lot and fixed the battery himself.

I called Jens on the way to the door.

Voicemail. His phone was in his softball bag, behind a dugout.

I texted him: "Marit. Hospital."

Then I tore a page off Tova's recliner chart and wrote on the back of it.

DROVE. SORRY. FLAT STREETS ONLY.

There are no flat streets in Duluth.

I took the long way down to the lake anyway, at twenty miles an hour, with the seat all the way back so the steering wheel cleared my stomach.

The hotel on the waterfront had a valet in a red vest.

He took one look at me getting out of the car and ran for a wheelchair.

"No time," I said, and gave him the keys.

The ballroom was at the end of a long carpeted hall.

The only way to the bathrooms was along the back of it.

Four hundred people at round tables with white cloths.
