Chapter 23: Visiting Hours

I didn't let him in.

I didn't send him away either.

"Wash your hands," I said through the glass. "Then sit in the family room and wait."

He went.

Jens woke up when the door hissed shut.

He looked at me in the wheelchair, then at the hallway, then back at me.

"Was that him?"

"That was him."

"Do you want me to go out there?"

"No." I put my hand on the warm plastic of C's box. "I want you to stay right where you are."

C's whole fist was still wrapped around his finger.

When I finally rolled myself into the family room, Anders was sitting on a vinyl couch under a poster about handwashing.

He stood up too fast.

"I'm not asking for anything," he said.

"You asked to see them."

"I'm asking that. Only that." He looked at the floor. "I'll wait as long as you say."

"Then you'll wait."

He waited.

He came back the next day at two, when visiting hours opened, and sat on the same couch until eight.

He came the day after that.
