Chapter 31: Operations Center

"Yes," I said.

He didn't move.

"Jens. I said yes. Get up, your knee's in the slush."

"I heard you." He was looking up at me like I was a road he'd never seen cleared. "I'm just making sure I remember it."

Tova untied the red string with her teeth, because her mittens were on.

Jens slid the ring onto my left hand.

It fit.

"How did you know my size?"

"Your old ring was on a certification in January," he said. "Tova measured the dent."

The air horns started again, and this time nobody stopped them.

The nameplate went on the mailbox the next morning.

BREKKE / SANDVIK.

Tova screwed it on with a real screwdriver this time, while Jens held her steady on the porch rail.

Marit was sentenced in the second week of December.

Aiding a forgery. A misdemeanor, because she'd testified.

Two years of probation and two hundred hours of community service.

She asked to do them at the transit garage, washing buses.

The bus driver from Woodland Avenue was her supervisor.

"She works hard," the bus driver told me. "She talks too much about her baby. I like her."

Karin's trial was set for March.

She'd sold the house at the top of the hill.

We got married on the Saturday before Christmas, in the snow operations center at the city garage.

The room with no windows and the big wall screen, where they'd walked me out with a box.

The drivers set up folding chairs in rows facing the screen.

The screen showed every street in Duluth, all of them green.

The pastor with the stopwatch married us.

He timed nothing.

Tova was the boss of the rings, and she had a clipboard for it.

I wore a plain white dress with long sleeves and thirty small buttons down the back.

Jens wore a dark suit the drivers' wives had let out across the shoulders.

He looked like he couldn't breathe in it and didn't care.

Anders and Marit stood together at the edge of the room by the dispatch desk.

Not together. Next to each other.

Marit had A and B. Anders had C and his son.
