Chapter 11: The Dean's Question

The Cromwell University interview was at ten o'clock on Sunday morning, in a brick building with a wide lawn and no guard.

Robby drove me there in the truck.

He had washed it.

I did not mention it, and neither did he.

"You'll be fine," he said, and parked at the curb. "You're the one who does the reading."

"I didn't sleep."

"Did you sleep on Friday?"

"No."

"Then it's the same as Friday." He shrugged. "You did fine on Friday."

I almost laughed.

I got out and smoothed my cardigan, which had a hole at the elbow that I had hidden with a safety pin.

The woman who interviewed me was the dean of the scholars' program.

She was about sixty, with gray hair cut short and a gray cardigan of her own, and she did not smile when she shook my hand.

Her office was small, and the windows looked out on the lawn.

On her desk was a folder.

"Miss Flanagan," she said. "Sit, please. Before we begin, I'd like to be straightforward with you."

I sat.

"We received a message late last night, sent to the scholarship committee's address. It's unsigned."

My hands went flat on my knees.

"It says that you made a false accusation against a classmate last spring. It says she was suspended, that she lost an athletic scholarship, and that you've never corrected it." She opened the folder. "It says Cromwell should think carefully about giving a full scholarship to a person who reports without checking."

The window was bright behind her, and I kept my eyes on her face.

It occurred to me that I could lie.

I could say that I did not know what she was talking about.

I could say it was jealousy, or a prank, or someone who wanted my seat.
