Chapter 23: Commencement

Selah's POV

Graduation was held on the football field at four o'clock, under a white sky and a canopy that the wind kept trying to take.

Folding chairs ran in rows across the grass, and the bleachers behind them were full of families holding programs against the glare.

My mother sat in the third row from the front in her good blazer, with Robby's aunt on one side of her and Delaney's mother on the other.

I had seen them find each other and shake hands.

The flyers were there, too.

Somebody had gone around before the gates opened and tucked them under every program, and I watched people unfold them, frown, and glance toward the stage.

The principal opened with a short welcome, and then she stepped away from the podium to adjust the microphone.

Dane Hildebrand walked up the aisle and took her place.

He wore the navy gown and the white stole of the class officers, and he had combed his hair.

For a second I thought he might say nothing at all.

"Good afternoon," he said, in his easy, warm voice. "Under the student handbook, the vice president introduces the president at commencement. I'm exercising that right."

"Mr. Hildebrand," the principal said, quite low. "You are not on the program."

"Then the program is wrong." He smiled at the crowd. "Families, I won't take long. You've all seen the flyer. I'd like you to know that the girl who is about to address you paid a clerk at the testing center to void the tickets of classmates she didn't like."

A murmur went along the bleachers.

"She also sang, on a table, for attention. Ask yourselves what kind of person does that."

"Excuse me."
