Chapter 7: Her Idea, She Said
Our homeroom teacher stood in the middle of the lot with his bag at his feet and his hair standing up.
He looked at the bus, the donuts and forty seniors holding coffee.
Then he looked at me.
"Selah. Tell me what is going on, in the shortest way possible."
"The class tickets are missing," I said. "Five of them still are. There's a game, and the tickets were hidden on this bus, and the person who hid them won't say where."
"The tickets that were in the office bin."
"Yes."
"The bin I was told you were carrying."
"Dane signed for it in my name on Thursday."
He closed his eyes for a second.
"Who is running this game?"
"I am," Delaney said.
She had stepped off the bus.
She stood with her hands clasped in front of her and her eyes bright.
"It was my idea, sir. All of it. I'm so sorry."
I had never seen anyone apologize so well.
She did not hurry and she did not hide.
She said she had wanted one last thing for our class, and that she had meant no harm.
She said every ticket was taped in a seat, because she had taped each one herself, and she would never have put anyone's future at risk.
Her voice broke twice, and the student teacher took a step toward her.
I saw our teacher's shoulders drop.
I could see him deciding that she was a good kid who had made a bad call.
"Delaney," he said gently, "that's still a very serious mistake."
"I know."
"Sir," I said.
He looked at me.
"She told us at the diner last night. She said, I hid every one of them myself, and I'm the only one who knows where."
