Chapter 16: Who's Watching

Gran was sitting up in a curtained bay in the emergency room with her left arm in a blue cast to the elbow.

She had a bruise on her cheekbone and her housecoat on over the hospital gown.

Then she saw me in the curtain gap, and her whole face changed.

"There she is," she said. "Look at you. You look worse than me."

I sat down on the edge of the bed and put my forehead on her good shoulder.

"I'm fine," she said into my hair. "It's a wrist. I've got another one."

"What happened?"

"Some idiot threw a brick through my window at five in the morning, that's what happened."

She patted my back with the cast, which hurt both of us. "I came down with the yardstick."

"Gran."

"I'd have got him, too. The bottom step moved."

"The bottom step has never moved in your life."

"It moved this morning," she said. "I'm suing it."

Dom was standing just outside the curtain in his overcoat.

He'd driven me over the bridge at ninety miles an hour and hadn't said a word.

Gran looked past me at him.

"The tall one," she said. "Come in. Don't loom."

He came in.

"Signora," he said. "I'm sorry."

"Did you throw it?"

"No."

"Then what are you sorry for?"

He didn't have an answer.

A police officer came in with a clipboard, young, with a mustache he was still working on.

"You're lucky, ma'am," he said. "Your neighbor called it in fast. The guy in the parked car across the street."

"What guy?" Gran said.

"Gray sedan. Said he'd been sitting there all night." He checked his clipboard. "He chased them halfway to Third Avenue. Didn't leave a name."

Gran looked at me.

I looked at Dom.

He didn't look away.
