Chapter 17: The Safe House
Cosima drove me out at seven the next morning, while Gran was still asleep upstairs at Maimonides.
She just showed up in the hallway with two coffees and her car keys.
"He's not there," she said. "I made him swear. It's his men and her."
"Where is it?"
"Breezy Point."
The safe house was a summer bungalow at the end of a sand lane by the ocean, shuttered for the winter.
Gray shingles, a porch with the chairs stacked and chained, a rowboat upside down in the dune grass.
A man sat on the porch steps in a parka, smoking, and he stood up when he saw Cosima's dented red hatchback.
He nodded at me.
"She's in the back," he said. "She threw her eggs at me."
He pointed at a yellow smear on his parka and went back to his cigarette.
Cosima stayed on the porch with him.
Inside, the bungalow smelled like salt and mildew and a space heater.
Oakley was sitting on a narrow bed in the back bedroom with her knees pulled up.
She was in a man's flannel shirt and sweatpants.
Her face had gone from purple to green and yellow, and her lip had scabbed.
