Chapter 11: Half a Scan

"I brought Dad a cake dish I'd been meaning to return," I said.

"With your bag zipped shut?"

"Ansel, it's a cake dish."

He stepped between me and the gate.

He was taller than I was by a whole head, and for the first time in my life I did not feel protected by it.

"You didn't tell me you were coming."

"Do I need to?"

"After the recording, after the scene at lunch?" He lowered his voice. "Yes. You're not well. I'm saying that as someone who loves you. Stay away from Dad until you've seen someone."

"I have seen someone."

"Who?"

"A doctor."

He waited, and I said nothing.

"Let me through," I said. "Or search me in the street."

A long moment went by.

Then he stepped aside, and I walked past him with my bag against my hip and my heart in my throat.

I did not look back.

That evening I was washing flour out of my hair at the studio sink when Kendrick knocked.

I let him in, still dripping, and went to fetch a towel.

He set his coat on the bed.

"Do you have a tissue?" he asked. "My nose is running from the cold."

"In my bag."

He opened it.

I heard the zipper stop, and then I heard nothing for a long time.

I came out of the bathroom with the towel around my neck.

He was sitting on the bed with a glossy black-and-white photograph in both hands.

At the top it said Hagan OB/GYN, my name and a date.
