Chapter 17: The Rain

I told him all of it, at the kitchen table, with the eggs going cold between us.

I did not make it kinder.

I told him about the bike, and the cheap rain jacket, and the order for a pad thai on Sixth Street at eleven at night.

I told him the traffic light was red, and the van behind me did not stop.

"It hit the bike first," I said. "Then I was on the road."

He had not moved since I said the name of the street.

"I couldn't get up," I said. "I remember the water running into my mouth. It tasted like metal."

"Eileen."

"A car stopped beside me."

His breath caught.

"Black," he said. "The back window down a few inches."

"You've seen it."

"Every night this week. I thought it was a dream."

"You were in the back seat."

The color left his face so fast I thought he might fall off the chair.

"I looked at you," I said. "And you looked at me. I know you did. I thought you'd seen me, and I thought that was the last thing in the world I wanted, to be seen by you like that."

"I didn't..."

"Wait."

I made myself go on.

"Then somebody's hand came up over your eyes. A small hand, with pale pink nails. And a girl's voice said, 'Don't look. It's gruesome.'"

I stopped.

The refrigerator hummed.

"And the car drove away," I said. "That's all. That's where it ends."
