Chapter 23: Lamp On

I took his wrist in the dark and said, "Quiet."

Behind us, Lavinia's brass lock lay in two pieces on the library floor.

The man with the gray ponytail had cut it off with bolt cutters at half past eleven, and put the pieces in my hand.

Now the bookcase stood open, and the little stair went down in the black.

The party roared on above us, with its lanterns and its three hundred masks.

I led Tiago down the stair, step by step, by his wrist.

At the bottom I closed the oak door behind us.

I had not lit the lamp.

I had put on my velvet mask again, and I had tied his on him in the library.

Neither of us had spoken since the terrace.

No names.

No ranks.

The rule held until midnight, and I intended to keep it to the last stroke.

I put my hand flat on his chest and felt the two discs under his shirt.

His heart was running hard.

I pushed him backward until his calves met the bed.

He sat.

I stood between his knees and unfastened the green silk, hook by hook, in the black.

I let it slide off me and pool at my feet.

I wore the emeralds and the mask and nothing else.

I took his hand and set it on my hip.

He drew a soundless breath.

His fingers moved over me as they had eight years ago, learning me, with no light at all.

I let him.

He found my waist, my ribs, the weight of my breast.

He bent his head and took my nipple in his mouth, and I put my hand over my own lips to stop the sound.

It was a game, and we both knew it.

It was also a gift.

I had lived eight years with the dark in my head and no face in it.

I wanted to give it a face, and a hand, and a name, in the same place.

I pushed him down onto his back and undid his belt.

I pulled his clothes away from him a piece at a time, in silence, and he lifted for me, and helped.

When he was naked I knelt over him on Gran's bed and ran my hands up his body.
