Chapter 10: His Bed
His house in Lakeville was too big for one man.
It had a gravel drive, a three-car garage, and a living room with a leather couch.
A huge television, and absolutely nothing on the walls.
"I don't live here," Axel said, from the kitchen. "I just sleep here."
I stood in the middle of the floor in my coat.
On the mantel was a single framed photo, the only picture in the house.
A bunch of boys in green jerseys, lined up in front of a rink.
A tall man behind them with a whistle around his neck.
My father.
Fourteen-year-old Axel was in the front row, missing a tooth, grinning at the camera.
I touched the glass.
"I look at that every morning," he said behind me. "I make coffee, and I look at him, and I say good morning."
"That's a lot to put on a man's mantel."
"I know."
"Show me your bed," I said.
He stopped.
I turned around.
He stood in the kitchen doorway with a dish towel in his hand, and his whole face went still and soft.
"Okay," he said.
The bedroom was upstairs at the end of the hall, a big room with a king bed and tall windows full of snow.
He turned on one lamp.
It threw a low golden light across the white sheets, and for the first time since I'd walked into the rink I felt completely unafraid.
I took off my coat.
I took off my sweater.
