Chapter 17: Treatment Table

I pressed record on my phone in the elevator.

Then I slid it into the inside pocket of my jacket, screen down, and walked into Ketterman's office with my contract in my hand.

He stood at the window in his grey suit.

"Ms. Lindqvist. Sit."

I sat.

He took the chair across the desk, folded his hands, and smiled.

"Congratulations on the progress," he said. "The captain's numbers are almost where they were."

"Almost."

"Almost isn't enough for me." He slid a single sheet of paper across the desk. "I need a report."

I looked at it.

It was a form with the Frost logo, titled Skating Assessment, with a blank at the bottom for my signature.

"What kind of report?"

"One that says the left knee cannot sustain NHL speed. That the loss of stride is structural. That you, as an independent coach, advise against a long-term contract."

"That isn't true."

"It doesn't have to be true. It has to be signed." His voice stayed gentle. "A contract with a documented injury can be voided with the league's approval. The captain goes on long-term reserve. I clear the cap."

"And Axel?"

"Is finished. Kindly. With a pension."

I kept my face still.

My heart was beating so hard I thought the phone would pick it up.

"And what do I get?"

"Fifty thousand," he said. "On top of the ninety. Paid the day you sign."

"That's a hundred and forty."

"Exactly what your father's rink needs."
