Chapter 18: Blindfold
The night before the deadline game, Axel could not stop pacing.
He walked the hallway of his big empty house in his socks, past the bare walls, past the photograph on the mantel.
I sat on the edge of his bed with a black silk tie in my hands.
It was the tie he wore on road trips.
"Come here," I said.
He stopped in the bedroom doorway.
"You're going to wear a hole in the floor."
"If I lose tomorrow, he sends me to Winnipeg."
"If you lose tomorrow, we have a recording," I said. "You're not losing tomorrow. Come here."
He came.
I stood up and put my hands on his chest and felt his heart going like a drum.
"Close your eyes."
He closed them.
I wound the tie over his eyes and knotted it at the back of his head, firmly.
He stood very still.
"Can you see?"
"No."
"Good."
"Kaisa."
"You're thinking too much," I said. "So I'm going to take your eyes away. You don't have to think. You only have to feel."
His throat worked.
"Okay," he said.
I led him to the bed by his belt.
I pushed him down onto the edge of the mattress.
He sat with his hands braced on his knees and his blindfolded face turned toward me.
I stripped slowly.
He couldn't see, but he could hear.
The soft sound of my sweater, the rasp of my zipper, the whisper of cloth falling to the floor.
His breath changed with every sound.
By the time I stood naked in front of him his mouth was open.
"Hands behind your back," I said.
He put them there.
I knelt between his knees and undid his jeans.
I took my time with him.
I kissed the inside of his thigh, then the other, then the hollow of his hip.
