Chapter 17: The Broker
I ran the corridor to the wardrobe shop with my bag banging against my hip.
The door stood open.
Racks of Giselle's peasant skirts swayed in a draft that should not have been there.
Roxy's tool belt lay in the middle of the floor, its pockets spilled, a tape measure still unspooling across the boards.
"Roxy!"
Nothing answered but the draft.
"I'm sorry about the mess," said a man's voice behind me. "She fought harder than I expected."
I spun around.
He sat on the cutting table with his ankles crossed.
He wore a grey overcoat and round silver glasses.
He was sixty or so, with neat white hair, and he held my friend's phone in one gloved hand.
I had never seen him before, and I knew exactly who he was.
"Where is she?"
"Safe. For the moment." He turned the phone over once. "My name doesn't matter, Miss Marceau. I'm here as a courtesy."
"A courtesy."
