Chapter 19: The Broken Engagement
At nine the next morning I stood in the board room where I had signed my name.
This time I had brought my own paper.
Nine people in dark suits sat around the long table.
Victor sat at the head with both hands folded over his cane, as calm as a man at a christening.
He had slept.
I could tell, because his collar was pressed.
Geoffrey stood beside me, still in his coat, with the dozen boxes stacked behind him on a hotel cart.
Alec had stayed in the lobby, because his thigh was stitched and he could barely climb stairs.
Roxy sat beside him with her wrists bandaged, refusing to leave his side.
Victor lifted a hand.
"We have a short agenda, I'm told," he said. "My son asked for time. Geoffrey."
Geoffrey took off his coat.
He laid it over a chair and walked to the table's center with something small in his closed hand.
"I am here to end my engagement to Miss Marceau," he said.
