Chapter 23: The Leaving

I found him in the alley behind the stage door, where Geoffrey had waited for me a week ago.

I was still in my white Giselle costume, with a coat pulled over it and my pointe shoes in my hand.

The rain had come back.

Alec stood under the lamp in his borrowed suit, with a canvas bag at his feet and his phone against his ear.

He ended the call when he saw me.

"Don't," he said.

"You didn't even take your seat for the curtain call."

"I saw it."

"You watched me from the aisle and then you walked out."

"I watched you dance for the first time," Alec said. "I never saw you do it all the way through."

"And?"

"It was the best thing I have ever looked at."

His voice broke on the last word, and he turned his face away.

I set my shoes on the step.

"Where are you going?"

"The district attorney's office. They're waiting up."

"I'm going to sign everything, Portia. Every contract. Eleven names, with the dates."
