Chapter 13: One Line
Diane set the roses on the desk and took off her gloves one finger at a time.
"You weren't supposed to find that today," she said.
"You knew it was in there," Elliot said.
"I knew it was somewhere. I told Spencer to clear the study, and he said it was all old work." She looked at the recorder in my hand. "He is twenty-nine years old and he has never once checked his own pockets."
I held the recorder against my chest.
"You told me the money was a gift between families," I said. "You knew he knew."
"Sit down, Margot."
"No."
"Then stand, and listen, because I'm going to say this once and kindly." Diane folded the gloves. "That yard has been in this family for forty years. Men with families work there. Forty of them. If the Fossum money doesn't wire on the fifteenth, they are out of work by Christmas."
"That's not my fault."
"No. It's your good luck, because I'm in a position to be generous."
She opened her purse and took out a checkbook.
She had it with her.
She had carried it into the house with the roses.
"Thirty-eight thousand four hundred," she said, and clicked her pen. "Today, not after things settle. You leave that machine on this desk, you stand beside my son on Saturday in a nice dress, and no one ever has to hear it."
Elliot moved.
He only took one step, but it put him between her and me.
"Mother," he said. "Put the pen down."
"You'd choose a girl you've known for ten days over your own brother?"
"I'd choose anybody over what he did."
"What did he do?" Diane said. "He loved a woman who wouldn't leave. Half the marriages in this city start worse."
