Chapter 14: The Signature

Elliot's POV

I didn't tell Margot where I was going Monday morning.

She had enough to carry, and I wanted to carry this one myself.

Lacey's father kept his office on the top floor of a downtown tower with his name in brass on the door.

His assistant showed me in, and he came around the desk with his hand out and his big gray head tipped back, glad to see me.

"The older brother," he said. "The one who lives in a tent. Sit, sit."

"I'd rather stand."

"Suit yourself." He sat. "Spencer says you've been difficult about the paperwork."

"I haven't seen paperwork."

"You will. My lawyer's drawing it up." He took a cigar tube out of a drawer and only rolled it between his fingers. "I put one million eight hundred thousand into your family's yard on the fifteenth. In return my daughter's husband has a name worth having, and I have a seat on your board and shares in the company. Your signature's on the shares. You hold the fifty-one."

"Who told you I'd sign?"

"Your mother. Your brother." He smiled. "They said you never cared about the yard. You'd sign anything to get back to the trees."

I let that sit.

I had cared about the yard for thirty years.

I had stayed away because of a phone call, and I'd let people believe the rest.

"What if there's no wedding?" I said.

His smile did not change, but his eyes did.

"Is there a reason there might not be?"

"I'm asking what the deal is."

"The deal is a family," he said. "I am not buying a lumber yard, Mr. Eisenhart. I could buy ten. I am buying a name for my daughter, and she wants that boy. No wedding, no check."
