Chapter 15: Rehearsal

Margot's POV

The rehearsal was Thursday at five, in the Eisenhart garden, under a white tent that smelled of cut grass.

A planner with a headset walked us through the aisle in pairs.

Diane had arranged the pairs.

I was to walk with a groomsman I'd never met, a cousin of Lacey's with a fixed smile, and Elliot was to stand at the far end of the line beside Spencer.

"Best man," Diane said brightly, pointing at him. "Brothers together."

"I didn't agree to that," Elliot said.

"It's what your brother wants."

Spencer, in the front row, lifted a hand and waved at us.

I walked the aisle with the cousin.

Lacey came after me on her father's arm, in jeans and a veil, laughing at the planner's jokes.

She did not look at me once.

When she reached the arch, Spencer kissed her hand, and I watched her face go soft and wrong at the same time.

Afterward Diane steered me by the elbow toward the buffet.

"Come meet Lacey's aunts," she said. "They'd love to hear how you two met."

"I'll be right there."

"Now, dear."

"In a minute, Diane."

She smiled at me with all her teeth and tightened her fingers.

I took my elbow back.

Across the lawn Elliot was standing alone by the hedge with his jacket over his arm, careful not to look at me.

I walked straight across the grass to him in front of all of them.

I could feel the whole party turn.

"Hi," I said.

"Hi."

"Can I borrow you? I need help carrying something."

"What?"

"Whatever it is."

He put his jacket on, and we walked out through the side gate.

His truck was parked down the lane, and neither of us said anything until we were inside it with the doors shut.

"I need to say something and I need you not to talk," I said.

"All right."
