Chapter 16: Aunt Bernie's Door

I opened the door with my right hand and slid my left into my sweater pocket.

My phone was already in it.

I pressed the red button by feel and left it running.

"Hi, Margot," Spencer said.

He stood on the pink porch in his rehearsal suit with the tie pulled loose.

His eyes were bright, and he smelled of whiskey.

"It's midnight," I said.

"I know what time it is. I can see the clock now." He smiled at his own joke. "May I come in?"

"No."

"Then I'll say it here." He glanced at the dark street and back at me. "You left the rehearsal with my brother."

"I did."

"You left it with your sweater on wrong."

I didn't look down.

"Say what you came to say, Spencer."

"All right." He leaned one shoulder on the post. "I'm going to be honest with you, because you're the only person I've ever been honest with, and I'm tired of lying. I know that's a joke. Stay with me."

"I'm listening."

"I'm not marrying Lacey because I love her." He said it flatly, like a weather report. "I like her. She's pretty, and she's easy, and she laughs at everything I say, and she has a father with a checkbook. I'm marrying the yard's loans. It's not complicated."

"Does Lacey know that?"

"Lacey thinks I'm the luckiest man alive, and she's the best thing that ever happened to me." He shrugged. "I let her."

"That's a cruel thing to do."

"It's a kind thing to do. She's happy."
