Chapter 18: Ask Him
Diane said it again, because forty women were watching her.
"Margot will be repaid," she said, "on the fifteenth, from the proceeds of the investment."
"From my money," Lacey's father said.
"From the family's."
"Which will be mine in three days." He folded his napkin and set it on a chair. "Thank you, Diane. That's clear."
He sat down and ate a forkful of cake.
Nobody in the room had ever seen anyone eat cake so slowly.
I found him in the parking lot afterward, standing beside a black car with the driver's door open.
"Miss Ellery," he said. "Walk with me."
We went along the row of cars.
He walked in silence for a long moment.
"My daughter is not a clever girl," he said. "She's a kind one, mostly. I've given her everything and she's never had to think. When she called me two years ago and said she'd found the man, I didn't ask a single question."
"Sir..."
"Let me finish." He stopped at the end of the row. "You said a song. A valley song. My daughter has never hummed a note in her life. I've heard her try. She sounds like a kettle."
I said nothing.
"Do you have something that says it was you?"
"I do."
"Do you have something that says he knew?"
I thought of the recorder, warm in my coat pocket, and the copies in three inboxes.
I thought of Diane's checkbook.
"I might," I said.
"Might isn't a thing." He studied my face, and I made myself hold still. "I don't need to see it. I need to know if I'm about to wire one million eight hundred thousand dollars to a liar."
