Chapter 20: The Vows

Margot's POV

The maid of honor dress was dove gray, with a neckline Diane had chosen.

I had let the hem down myself in Aunt Bernie's kitchen.

I stood at the head of the aisle with a bouquet of white roses.

A memory stick was taped to the inside of my wrist.

Under the tent two hundred guests fanned themselves with programs.

The garden smelled of cut lilies and warm grass.

Aunt Bernie sat in the fourth row in her navy dress, with Clancy on a leash at her feet.

Clancy wore a small bow tie she had made from a napkin.

A man at a folding table beside the speakers, with a laptop and a thick pair of headphones, was running the sound.

At noon I had slipped him two hundred dollars and a plain request.

"At the vows," I'd said. "When I nod, play this. All of it. Don't stop for anyone."

"Not even the bride?"

"Not even the bride."

He had looked at me for a long moment and shrugged.

"It's your money," he'd said.

Now the quartet began.

Everyone stood.

I had half expected Lacey not to come.

She came.

She walked down the aisle on her father's arm in a dress that cost eleven thousand dollars.

Her chin was so high I was afraid she'd trip.

She did not look at the guests.

She looked straight ahead at the arch, where Spencer waited in a pale suit with his hands folded.

Elliot stood a step behind him in a dark one.

Elliot's eyes met mine across the whole length of the garden.
