Chapter 6: The Check

I took the program card into the powder room off the front hall and held it under the light.

Maid of Honor, Margot Ellery, in gold script.

The ink was dry and the card was embossed.

Diane had printed it days ago, before she ever asked me, because she had known I would not say no in front of twenty-two guests.

I had not said no.

I had sat there with my mouth shut, and now my name was on the wedding of the man I had hummed to sleep.

I ran the tap and tried to decide whether to tear the card up or keep it as proof.

Lacey found me before I decided.

She locked the door behind her and leaned against it with her face crumpling.

"Please don't hate me," she said.

I turned off the tap.

"You hummed a car commercial at a ninety-year-old woman."

"I panicked." Her mascara had started to run. "I don't even know what song it was. Spencer never told me."

"He never told you because you never sang it."

"I never said I did!"

I stared at her.

"I never said it was me," Lacey said. "Not once, Margot. He just assumed. I came on Sundays and I talked, and he laughed and said I was the only one who made him feel normal. And then one day he said, you've been here for me from the start. And I thought, what do I say? No, it was Margot, she's in the kitchen counting your pills?"

"Yes," I said. "That's exactly what you say."

"You'd have told him yourself if it mattered to you." Her voice sharpened. "You've had three years. You never said a word."

My fingers had gone numb on the edge of the sink.

"That's not the same," I said.

"It's exactly the same. You were happy being quiet. You liked it. You liked being the one who needed nothing."
