Chapter 8: Terms

I should have said something sensible.

I stood in a cold lumber office with my bandaged hand against my chest and said, "Nobody ever listens to anything I say."

"I did."

"You were in Alaska."

"I was listening in Alaska."

He took one step toward me, and the desk was behind my hips, and there was nowhere to go but up.

I didn't go anywhere.

"I'd hear your voice on the flight line and I'd forget what I was supposed to be doing," he said. "I loaded a plane with the wrong crates once. I stood there with the manifest and couldn't read it."

"That sounds unsafe."

"It was."

He lifted his right hand.

He didn't touch me with it.

He held it a few inches from my jaw and waited, and I could feel the heat coming off his palm.

"Hands only," I said.

"Yes."

"That's a hand."

"It is." His voice had dropped. "It's mine, and it's asking."

I did not say yes.

I turned my face one quarter inch into it.

His palm settled against my cheek, large and warm and a little calloused, and my eyes closed by themselves.

I had never been touched on the face like that.

Three years of changing bandages, and no one had ever once put a hand on my face.

His thumb moved across my cheekbone.

"Margot," he said.

I opened my eyes.

His were dark and very close.

He was looking at my mouth, and his throat moved when he swallowed, and under my fingertips, where I had somehow put my good hand flat on his chest, his heart was going hard and fast.
