Chapter 20: The Last Toast
The room applauded.
Four hundred people clapped for my copy of my ring on another woman's hand.
Vanessa turned her wrist slowly, left and right, so the camera crew at the front could get it.
Celia lifted her glass higher.
"This stone has gone to every Merriam bride for three generations," she said. "Tonight it goes to the woman my son should have married in the first place."
Davis smiled.
It was the cornered smile. I'd seen it at every dinner where his mother said something about me.
Gus's hand found the small of my back.
"Not yet," I said.
There were six toasts.
An investor in the Champlain project, a big man with a sunburn, talked about ninety rooms on the lake.
Vanessa thanked Celia for "giving me a home."
Then the banquet captain stepped up to the stage and took the microphone from its stand.
He didn't look at Celia.
"Ladies and gentlemen," he said. "The last toast of the evening."
He walked down the steps and held the microphone out to me.
