Chapter 23: The Letter
Avis read Davis's note first.
She read it out loud.
"Miss Tibbetts. This was in my grandfather's desk, which has stood in my mother's office since he died."
"The envelope was already open when I found it. I'm sorry it took thirty-five years, and me, to bring it to you. Davis."
She set the note down.
"Already open," Gus said.
"Celia," I said.
Avis didn't say anything.
She slid the old letter out of its envelope. One sheet, folded in three, in a tall slanting hand.
She put her glasses on.
"Dear Avis," she read.
Then she stopped and snorted.
"He spelled my name right. That's new."
Gus laughed, startled.
Avis cleared her throat and went on.
"I am forty-seven years old and I have been a coward since I was twenty-four."
"I am writing to say so, though I don't expect to have the courage to mail it."
"Well, he got that right," Avis said.
"I told my wife the ring was my mother's. She wore it to every party for twenty years and never once took it off to look."
"Last month my son's new wife asked me where the stone came from. I lied to her too, and I watched her believe me."
