Chapter 11: Roxy's Folder

Roxy lived over a bakery, and she had spread the folder across her kitchen table by the time I got there.

"Sit," she said. "Don't touch the cinnamon rolls until you've read the red tab."

I sat.

The red tab held two court filings and a stack of printed news items.

"Woman number one," Roxy said. "Nineteen years ago she was a widow with a small shipping line. Russell Kane moved in, called himself her first love. Within a year she'd signed a managing-partner agreement."

"The same one they brought me."

"Same wording, same box number." She tapped it. "She lost the company, the house and her husband's name on the building. She sued. It was sealed in a settlement."

"And woman number two?"

"Eleven years ago, a different city, a different company. He was her old college boyfriend. Same ending, same seal."

My throat had gone dry.

I looked at the photographs clipped to the first page.

There was Russell, younger, smiling at a woman's elbow.

A few steps behind them stood a boy of about ten in a school blazer, holding a paper plate and looking at the ground.

I knew that boy.

I knew the set of his shoulders.

"June," Roxy said gently.

"He's been in it since he was a child."

"He was a kid in that one, and a teenager in the next. But there's a third." She slid a paper across. "Six years ago. A filing in a county I had to call twice. Look at the witness line."
