Chapter 6: Rooftop

Russell's friend owned a rooftop bar downtown, and on Tuesday night Russell invited the whole family to see it.

My mother wore silver.

My father came because I asked him to, in a jacket that was too warm for the evening, and he stood by the rail with a ginger ale and watched the ferries.

"Dad, you can leave whenever you want."

"I know, sweetheart. I'm enjoying the lights."

He wasn't, but he said it kindly, so I kissed his cheek and went to find my part.

Chet was waiting for me by the bar with two drinks.

He hadn't said a word about Roxy's messages for three days.

He hadn't mentioned the rules, either, and he had kept every one.

"In front of them," he said now, and handed me a glass.

"In front of them."

He put his free hand at my waist and drew me against his side.

It was no different from the dinner.

It was completely different, and I took a long sip to cover it.

Russell was twenty feet away with a man in an expensive suit.

He saw us and lifted his glass, and the man in the suit turned to look.

"Your father is watching," I said.

"My father's always watching."

"Is that a problem?"

"Not tonight." He bent his head until his mouth was near my ear. "Tonight he should see you laugh at something I said."
