Chapter 17: The Act Drops
He set his tray down on an empty seat.
Carefully, unwilling to waste good champagne.
Then he started up the side steps toward the wings.
Nobody stopped him.
Every eye in the hall was on the girl in handcuffs at the back of the aisle.
I took one step back.
My heel hit the curtain rope.
I opened my mouth to scream.
Nothing came out.
Not a sound.
Just a hot dry rasp, the noise a kettle makes before it starts.
He came through the gap in the curtain.
Up close he smelled like cigarettes and kitchen grease.
There was a waiter's knife in his hand, the kind with a corkscrew, its little blade open.
He grabbed my left arm above the elbow.
My bad shoulder lit up white.
"Hello, Colette," he said.
His voice was soft and ordinary.
"You should've stayed deaf."
He pulled me toward the loading dock corridor.
I dug my heels in and he dragged me anyway.
I swung my free fist at his head.
He knocked it away without looking.
Then, above us, something hit the stage.
