Chapter 18: Six Months

We got home at one in the morning.

The camera vans had gone.

Somebody had wedged a bouquet of white lilies in the bars of the gate, the kind you send to a funeral.

Gran was waiting up in the front hall in her pink tracksuit.

She looked at his bandaged arm and his swollen nose.

Then she signed, very calmly, Was it him?

Leland nodded.

Did you get him?

He shook his head.

Gran looked at me.

He came back for her, Leland signed. I let him go.

Gran's face did something soft I'd never seen it do.

Then she said out loud, in her too-loud voice, "Good boy," and went up to bed.

I slept in my own room again.

I didn't sleep much.

At eight the detective called Leland's phone.

He wanted everything they had on the driver by noon.

Every photo, every note, every address.

Leland was downstairs with his lawyers on speaker, because his uncle had filed an emergency motion at seven.

He gave me the key to the closet without looking up from the kitchen table.
