Chapter 23: Third Job
The Oakland police kept him in a room with no window and a steel ring bolted to the table.
I saw him first through the glass.
He sat with his cuffed hands in his lap and his head tilted a little to one side.
They'd taken his clothes, so he wore a paper jumpsuit.
Dock workers had found him at four in the morning, beating on the inside of a container.
Somebody had locked it from the outside.
It was due to be loaded at six, bound for Busan, three weeks at sea.
There was no water in it.
"He's worked out what that box was for," the detective said beside me. "That's why he's talking. Or says he will."
He looked down at me.
"You don't have to go in there."
I wrote on my pad.
He drove a truck into me. I can sit in a chair across from him.
Leland stood at my other shoulder.
He'd asked the front desk for exactly one thing, and the detective had said yes.
The observation room.
In the car he'd said, "Term five. Does this count as the room?"
