Chapter 27: Lexi Turns
The door at the back opened.
Lexi came down the aisle in a black blazer and flat shoes, with her platinum hair pulled back plain.
No neon.
No beauty mark drawn darker than it was.
She looked like someone dressed by a lawyer.
My mother made a small sound behind our table.
My stepfather put his hand over hers.
Lexi didn't look at either of them.
She didn't look at me.
The clerk had to ask me to step down.
I passed her at the rail, close enough to touch.
She kept her eyes on the flag.
She was sworn in, and she sat, and the uncle's lawyer smiled at her.
"Ms. Sheridan. You were engaged to Leland Halstead first."
"Yes."
"And you left four days before the wedding."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Lexi looked at her hands.
"Because I was scared of him," she said. "Everybody said he was dangerous."
The lawyer nodded, gentle.
"And after your stepsister married him in your place, did she ever tell you why she'd done it?"
Lexi was quiet.
