Chapter 24: White Roses
Six women in black cardigans did my wedding flowers.
I was forbidden to touch a stem.
They came at dawn on Saturday to the church with the wholesaler's van, coolers of white roses, and Nonna's best scissors.
"You buried our husbands," said the widow whose husband had been number nine. "Sit down and let us do this one."
I sat in the front pew in my cream wool dress and watched them cut every stem on a slant.
Pippa stood up for me, walking without her pole, hair loose for once, and so pleased with herself she hiccuped.
Nonna sat in the first row with her spoon in her lap, crying openly and glaring at anyone who noticed.
At the altar Domenico waited in the charcoal suit with a single white rose in his lapel.
His hand was steady when it took mine.
I counted his pulse through the wrist, and it was slow and even.
"I'll ask," he said, when his turn came, in front of the priest and half of South Philadelphia.
"Every day. And I'll listen to the answer."
That was the whole of his vow, and it was the best one I have heard.
I put the ring on his finger, and nobody timed the kiss.
By midnight, the house on Delancey Street was ours and quiet.
