Chapter 13: The Server Room

Mickey pulled the tape off the locker door and read the line next to the red circle.

12:31 AM. SERVER RM. GRANTED. LAZZARA, N.

Not Kelli's card.

Nunzio's.

He read it four times.

Then he ran down the service stairs to the car with the keycard in one fist and the paper in the other.

Santino was leaning on the back door in the cold, gloves in his coat pockets for once.

He took one look at Mickey's face and opened the door for him.

In the back seat Mickey put the printout on Santino's knee.

Santino read it under the dome light.

His jaw moved once.

"She kept this," he said.

"She taped it where she used to keep a picture of us."

"That isn't a love letter, Mickey. It's insurance."

"Against who?"

"Against him. If this falls on somebody, she wants it to fall on Nunzio."

"Then why's she telling the table it was you?"

"Because it hasn't fallen yet."

Santino took out his phone and called the hotel's head of security at a quarter to three in the morning.

The man picked up on the first ring.

Mickey listened to half a conversation that got shorter and shorter.

When Santino hung up, he sat very still.

"The access log for that night shows nothing after midnight," he said. "Clean. It was overwritten again on Monday."

"Monday. The day the license got pulled."

"And the city's investigator had every keycard to that room switched off. Mine too. Evidence, pending."

"Who asked him to?"

"Guess."

Mickey looked at the printout on Santino's knee.

"So this is a copy of a log that doesn't exist anymore."
