Chapter 19: Rye, Neat
Every person in the room was looking at Mickey.
The old man in the flat cap. The mailman. The server with the nose ring, frozen with a tray of Jamesons.
Mandy at the door with her stamp in the air.
Mickey reached for the Rittenhouse.
His father's bottle. Same as his father's father's.
He poured two fingers into a heavy glass, neat, and set it on the bar in front of Santino.
"Twelve dollars," he said.
Santino took out a money clip and put a twenty on the wood.
Not an envelope. Not through a driver.
Cash on the bar, everybody else.
Mickey made change and put it in front of him.
Santino left it there.
Slowly, the room started talking again.
Somebody fed the jukebox. Sinatra.
"You don't drink," Mickey said.
"No."
"So why'd you order it?"
"It's what my father drinks after midnight. I wanted to see it poured on this bar."
Santino turned the glass a quarter turn on the wood, the way the Don always did.
