The Don opened one eye.

"The whole party," he said.

"Forty-one guests. Same bar, same lounge, same chairs. I pour every drink they had that night, in the order they had it."

"And the girl?"

"She works it. Same headset. Same well."

The Don breathed out through his nose.

It might have been a laugh.

"My wife would have liked you," he said. "She liked a show."

Two quick taps on the glass.

Mandy. Time.

Mickey put the gold ring in the breast pocket of Mandy's too-short scrubs and pushed the linen cart out past the folding chair.

The next Sunday he walked into the back room on Taylor Street alone.

Santino's chair was empty now too, next to his father's.

Nunzio sat at the far end in a grey suit, cracking pistachios into a saucer.

"Look who it is," he said. "The widow."

Mickey set the ring down on the green cloth in front of him.

The whole table went quiet.

Then Nunzio turned it over and ran his thumb inside the band.

"Where did you get this?"

"From the plastic bag on his bed rail. He told me to open it."

"He stole it off a sick old man," Nunzio said.
