Chapter 29: Upstairs

Santino's driver dropped them at the green door at a quarter to five and didn't wait to be told to leave.

The bar was dark.

The crew had gone home. Mandy had left a note on the whiteboard in green marker.

GROUT DONE. DON'T BE WEIRD. LOVE YOU.

Santino's gloves were still lying on the bar beside the crack, where he'd left them that morning.

He looked at them.

He didn't pick them up.

The stairs to the flat were in the back, behind a door with a brass knob that stuck.

Mickey had to put his shoulder into it.

"Very romantic," Santino said behind him.

"Shut up. It's original."

"Like the crack."

"Exactly like the crack."

The flat upstairs was three small rooms and a radiator that knocked.

Mickey had moved his old bed from the two-flat on Wednesday. A box of records. His father's photo of the bar in 1961.

Frost was growing up the inside of the front window in ferns.

Below them, the snow was turning blue on Halsted under the streetlights.

Santino stood in the middle of Mickey's kitchen in his black wool coat with snow melting in his hair.

He was the most dangerous man Mickey had ever met.

He looked like he didn't know where to put his hands.

"You can sit," Mickey said.

"I don't think I can."

"You sat on my father's stool in front of the whole neighborhood."

"That was easier."

Mickey took the coat off Santino's shoulders.

He hung it on the hook by the door, next to his own.

Santino's sweater was grey and soft and smelled like sawdust and cedar.

Mickey put his hands flat on Santino's chest, the way he had the night he asked him to stay.

Santino's heart was going just as hard as it had then.

"Last time, I asked," Mickey said. "And you let me. And then you went downstairs and kept a folder in a drawer."

"Yes."

"This time I'm not asking you to stay."

Santino's face changed.

Mickey slid his hands up to Santino's jaw.

"I'm telling you," he said. "You're staying. Tonight, and tomorrow, and the day after that. And I'm the one who says what happens in this room."

Santino's shoulders shuddered.

"Yes," he said.

"Say it again."

"Yes."

Mickey kissed him.

Slow, this time. He had all the time in the world, and he took it.
