Chapter 10: Six Days

Adamo's loft sat over the garage, up the same iron stair as the roof.

It was one long room with a brick wall, a plain bed and a kitchen the size of a closet.

The window looked out over the Narrows.

Rain had started at dusk and ran down the glass in sheets.

I stood in the middle of the floor with my wet jacket in my hands.

He had taken off his boots at the door.

"Six days," I said.

"I know."

"I need to not think about it for one night."

He crossed the room and took the jacket from me and hung it on a hook.

"Then don't," he said.

I looked at his mouth.

I'd been looking at it since the roof.

For a week I had been scared and furious and sleeping in a spare room under a crucifix, with my brother snoring through the wall.

I stepped up to him and put both hands in his shirt.

"I'm not asking," I said. "I'm telling you."

"Good," said Adamo, and kissed me.

It was nothing like the roof.

The roof had been a question.

This was an answer, long and slow and thorough.

His hands cupped my face, then my shoulders, then slid down my back to pull me flush against him.

I made a sound I'd never made in my life.

He walked me backward until the backs of my knees hit the mattress, and I sat.

He went down on one knee in front of me.

He undid my boots, one lace and then the other.
