Chapter 20: The Vote
The oldest capo called the Table for noon on Saturday, in the tent where I was supposed to marry.
He walked into my father's garden at eleven in the morning with his cane.
He told the two hundred guests who had not heard the wedding was off to sit down.
They sat.
Nobody argues with a man of eighty-three in a black overcoat.
The white tents stood wet and shining.
Somebody had pulled the flower arches down overnight, and the band's chairs were stacked behind the fountain.
In the long tent, near the spot where I had dropped the ring, the capos took their seats at a plank table.
Seven capos, the whole Table now.
My father took the head chair, in the pearl-gray suit, with his rosary and his glass of water.
Old Barbieri sat at the foot, as a guest, with the gray cardigan and the red-wax paper folded in his pocket.
