Chapter 22: The New Rule
I looked at the ring in my palm, and then at two hundred faces waiting for me to close my fist.
It was heavy, and warm from my father's hand and my brother's.
I had worn a square diamond three weeks ago and thought it was a coin.
This was the same weight, with a different name on it.
"No," I said.
The tent made a sound.
"Fabi," Enrico said. "You earned it."
"I earned a vote. I didn't earn a throne."
"Then who?"
"You."
I took his hand, turned it palm up, and put the ring back into it.
"You were the heir before Papa sold you."
"You carried a lie for eight months and never gave him up. That's what a Don is, Rico."
"I'm not a Don," he said. "I'm a baker."
"You're the baker who got his father's ring."
Somebody in the back laughed, a short, helpless sound, and the tent loosened.
"I'll take something else," I said.
I turned to the oldest capo.
