Chapter 23: The Walk Back
I crossed Wilson Avenue in my socks, through the rain, and stopped in front of him.
He stood up.
Water ran off his hair and down his face, and his dark eyes were enormous.
"I'm not following you," he said. "I'm sitting on a step. It's a public step."
"For how long?"
"Since four."
"Why?"
He lifted the paper bag from the ground and held it out.
I looked inside.
There was a foil container of Rosa's gravy, still warm, and a note in red marker: Bring it or don't come back. R.
I laughed so hard I had to hold on to his sleeve.
Behind me a door banged.
My mother came down the front steps of the two-family house with an overnight bag and a pink umbrella.
A Buick pulled up at the curb with her sister at the wheel.
"I'm going to Bayonne," my mother announced, to the street at large. "My sister needs her casserole dish."
"Mom, it's pouring."
"I have an umbrella." She stopped in front of Luciano and looked up at him, the way she had in the hospital. "If she bites you, you've earned it."
"Yes, ma'am."
She got into the car.
It pulled away, and the rain hissed behind it.
We stood on the sidewalk in the dark.
"I'm not yours because of a page," I said.
"I know."
"Say you know it."
"You're not mine because of a page," he said. "Or a bill, or a gun, or a house."
"I'm not yours because I owe you."
"You don't."
"I'm here because I picked this."
I took his hand and led him across the street, up the stairs, and into the narrow hall of my mother's flat.
My room was at the end.
It had a single bed with a quilt my grandmother made, and a bookshelf of paperbacks.
