Chapter 13: The Campaign
The student charter is forty-one pages long, and Ruby read all of it on Sunday night.
She called me at seven the next morning, before my alarm, with her mouth full of toast.
"Page thirty. Article nine. A special election needs signatures from one third of the student body."
"That's a hundred and thirty-four people."
"Four hundred students, Hattie. One third rounded up. I did the math myself, so you can trust it."
"You did it on toast?"
"I do all my best work on toast."
By second period she had printed a petition, and by lunch she had a pink marker and a clipboard and a plan.
I stood in the dining hall doorway in my blazer with the mended cuff and looked at four hundred faces.
Julian sat at the president's table with his back very straight.
He did not look at me, and that was our agreement.
If he so much as nodded, Presley's father could say the president was picking a successor.
The loan would be called that same afternoon.
I walked up to the nearest table and put the clipboard down in front of a junior.
