Chapter 15: Withdrawn

The headmaster's hallway is on the second floor, and it is lined with portraits of men who never had to carry their own trays.

I walked down the middle of it at a quarter to eight with my backpack still on.

Students were arriving on both ends, and they slowed down when they saw my face.

The headmaster's door was open.

He was standing behind his desk, adjusting his tie in the window glass, and he saw me in the reflection before he turned.

"Miss Brennan. Good morning."

"Where is Julian Whitcombe?"

"Mr. Whitcombe's account is under review."

"His locker is empty."

"His enrollment has been placed on hold, through Friday, while the Board treasurer's office reviews his tuition. It's routine."

"Show me the rule."

He blinked.

"I'm sorry?"

"The page in the handbook that says a student can be pulled out of class without a hearing. I've read the handbook. I'd like the page number."

Behind me, the hallway had gone completely silent.

I glanced over my shoulder, and there were thirty students there, then fifty, standing in rows against the portraits with their phones in their hands.
